What Child Is This? by Irene Merring

When Irene approached me for her “What Child Is This?” project, I didn’t have to think before saying “yes.” As an artist, I let me intuition decide for me at times. The reality of the project: no time for us to create some new (and relevant) photography; impending deadline; completely new concept - a Christmas theme. As a designer, I tend to cringe with holiday themes - the cheese factor is always looming, and finding a unique and meaningful way to tie in a holiday to an existing brand is much more challenging than it looks.

Thankfully, the light bulb went off in someone’s head - Irene recalled some portraits of herself in a long, hooded silver gown. While we might typically imagine muffs, Santa hats, scarves and mittens for Christmastime apparel, I couldn’t help but notice that her hooded gown - aside from the silver - felt so appropriately Biblical. A long, hooded garb is the archetypal garment of the Middle Eastern nomad, perfectly suited for the three kings who visited the newborn Christ. And like those gift-bearing wise men, Irene is generously giving us this track for free. You can download it here.

Bodies, water, blood

Last spring I joined photographers Katie Chao & Ben Meussig of shooting brooklyn, Mike Genato (RVRS:PLAY) and musician Irene Merring for a photoshoot at Floyd Bennett Field, an abandoned airfield in Brooklyn. It was a raw day, perfect for capturing the night/day light effects that Katie & Ben created.

Irene was a sport, climbing into foliage and even splashing in presumably icy water in murky-looking conditions.

At one point, the only thing missing in my footage was yellow tape and a body bag.

But Irene is safe and definitely alive, though no longer in New York - perhaps this dreary day was nature foreshadowing her transformation into a west coast-based artist.*

*Interestingly, it was raining on the day I left New York for the west, just as it rained on the day I left New York for Europe, years ago. Hm…

Behind The Scenes: The Asteroid Shop & The Ghost Wolves shoot with LightBright

The Asteroid Shop & The Ghost Wolves are Austin-based bands I had the pleasure of working with this past week while their tour stopped in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We snapped some photos in front of these incredible murals downtown near Gold Street.

“The Asteroid Shop’s self titled debut is going to make a lot of people really happy,” raves MVRemix. “….Asteroid lays on the indie sound pretty thick, and tempers it expertly with clean electric guitars and Jonathan Koya’s crisp drumming approach…. It’s an album with staying power, if only enough people decide to get up and get on it.”

Music video blog LightBright filmed acoustic performances of both bands in the downtown area. I caught some footage of their process.

The Asteroid Shop performed “Destroyer” from their self-titled debut in the plaza near historic Route 66.

Guitar & Vocals: Eric Brendo, Guitar: Todd Pruner, Shakers: Jonathan Konya, Shakers & Vocals: Carley Carazy Wolf

After the sun set, everyone headed over to the Albuquerque train station to shoot The Ghost Wolves under the bridge.

“Their live show is a bit of a spectacle,” says the Austin Chronicle. “Musically, you’ll find hints of popular acts in the mainstream such as The White Stripes, but you can definitely feel a bit of Texas lurking…At times, Carley sounds a bit more ferocious than comparable groups, but that sort of passion only strengthens the band’s sound. We’re really excited about this group,” boasts Austin Town Hall.

The Ghost Wolves performed “Gonna Live” with some backup from The Asteroid Shop:

I have had the pleasure of working with Irene Merring on the artwork for her new EP, After The Fall. Raw, sincere emotion; brilliant writing; immense pipes. You can check out her first single, “Don’t Feel” on her website »
In the past I have shared the intense work of this artist. She is a powerful woman, unrestrained and superfluous with creative energy. This new material is a culmination of personal strife and the will to rise up and challenge life’s less-than-charming obstacles. For a peek behind the scenes:

“The Good Samaritan” live acoustic

“Given their [The Pierces] talent, the wonder is that nobody has noticed them before. They’ve been releasing albums on American labels since 2000, but claim the records were barely promoted so they went more or less unheard. This was despite them ‘casting spells’ to change their luck, something they’re a bit sheepish about now. ‘We didn’t use snake blood or eye of newt or anything, it was more visualization,’ Allison says. ‘Some people think you can create your own reality, and that’s what we wanted, but we had to work through a lot of emotional shit first.’”

Caroline Sullivan, “The Pierces: ‘We’re not poppy. We sound pop-u-lar!’” The Guardian

“You’ll Be Mine” official music video (making of)

Artists: Mirabai Ceiba

A gentle yet expansive spirit pervades all the music of Mirabai Ceiba…. Their concerts are group celebrations for peace—joyous and loving occasions that embody the duo’s profound belief in music as a universal language uniting all the world’s peoples, cultures and traditions.

Mirabai Ceiba is a duo consisting of guitarist/singer Markus Sieber and singer/harpist/keyboardist Angelika Baumbach… Markus is East German. Angelika was born in Tucson, Arizona, and grew up in a small village near Mexico City, the daughter of a Mexican mother and German father.

Markus and Angelika first met at a street fair at Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival and quickly fell in love… the newly formed couple decided to share their love with the world through uplifting music steeped in spirituality, tenderness and beauty.

Together, Angelika and Markus have forged engaging new style of world devotional music blending Gurmukhi mantras from the Kundalini Yoga tradition with original songs in English and Spanish that reflect a Native American influence and also draw words of wisdom from Rumi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Guru Nanak and Yogi Bhajan. Through exquisitely crafted recordings like their CD A HUNDRED BLESSINGS, Mirabai Ceiba weave a beguiling tapestry from these diverse influence and sources. And that’s what the music feels like: a beneficent and abundant gift from the universe. In concert, they inspire all present to chant together in a spirit of compassionate love and Oneness.

Even the name Mirabai Ceiba embodies the influences of both India and Native Latin America. Mirabai (1498-1547) was a Hindu mystical singer. Her songs express the longing of the individual self to be one with the universal self, represented by Krishna. For Angelika and Markus, the name Mirabai “is the exploration, the devotion, the inspiration in all the different aspects of divinity.”

And the Ceiba is a sacred tree of Latin America which is never cut and grows very tall. “We wish our music could be like the Ceiba tree,” say Markus and Angelika, “with roots deep in Mother Earth and branches extending far and wide into Father Sky.”
