Take a moment: grammar lessons
Marilyn Monroe may have contributed to the stereotype of the “dumb blonde,” but this bright woman had better writing skills than most today who consider themselves “smart” Great writing can be rendered mediocre by a failure to utilize correct grammar and punctuation. As an editor, I see this time and again; poor grammar skills, though, are so common nowadays that one...

Nothing To Lose But Our Illusions
an interview with David Edwards David Edwards: It’s not enough to just sit there and have compassionate thoughts. Your compassionate thoughts need to be reflected in what you do. How can you aspire to compassion and yet work for an arms manufacturer? You need to help other people. Derrick Jensen: What do you say to people who feel they are busy struggling to get by and don’t have...

What Child Is This? by Irene Merring
When Irene approached me for her “What Child Is This?” project, I didn’t have to think before saying “yes.” As an artist, I let me intuition decide for me at times. The reality of the project: no time for us to create some new (and relevant) photography; impending deadline; completely new concept - a Christmas theme. As a designer, I tend to cringe with holiday...

Thrive: What on Earth Will It Take
Watch here. This documentary has a lot going for it. Its sources are fantastic. Its research is deep. Its message profound. It also has a few things going for it that will certainly prevent certain individuals from seriously entertaining it: (1) A Science Fiction Bent. Yes, it talks about aliens. It “goes there.” But it does so with an open mind to all possibilities, rather than the...

Time out for poetry
If you are new to this blog then you may be unaware of the poetry, which has moved here. I don’t know if I picked up a paint brush or pen first in this life. Both have served me well. (I do know that I used a computer at a very young age - young for my generation, and I’m still deciphering how healthy that is turning out.) This poem came to me from a friend who has battled cancer four...

Kundalina with Sat Jivan Jamila
Fall in New Mexico is glorious. It begins with an Indian summer, but not the lingering kind; it’s a gentle, even progression into cooler weather, when the scent of burning leaves fills the air. During the warmer part of fall, just before the trees began to color, Brett Adamek shot me in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains during a Kundalini Yoga-inspired meditation. If you are unfamiliar...

Ethics and Creativity →
An interesting topic below: 4 Reasons To Quit The Music Business by Irene Merring. When I was younger all I wanted was to work in music, somehow. I was diverted from this, though not because I was aware of what was happening to the industry. At first I was thankful for the diversion, all things considering. Now, later in life, I know many people in this business, and that in and of itself is...

Artist: Jaybo
Jaybo (1968) is a runaway, setting out and wandering along in a physical as well as in a creative sense. In his youth, he ran away from his house in southern France, settling in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the beginning of the 1980’s. When he founded the streetwear label “Irie Daily” and the cultural magazine “Style” at the beginning of the 1990’s, his influence on Berlin’s youth culture and fashion...

Bodies, water, blood
Last spring I joined photographers Katie Chao & Ben Meussig of shooting brooklyn, Mike Genato (RVRS:PLAY) and musician Irene Merring for a photoshoot at Floyd Bennett Field, an abandoned airfield in Brooklyn. It was a raw day, perfect for capturing the night/day light effects that Katie & Ben created. Irene was a sport, climbing into foliage and even splashing in presumably icy...

Artist: Ben Slow
I paint what I sees – in the urban environment, in the media and in the people of the city that I love.  Working from my London studio, I find an exciting dynamic in the contradictory relationship between the glamorous pop images and the raw, unrefined urban context in which such icons are celebrated.  The point of my work is to reduce the silhouette to its most elegant and minimal, while ...

With my children
This photo was taken in Brooklyn by Brett Adamek before I moved to New Mexico. On the left: palimpsest (2010) 2 panels 10in x 30in each, fabric, acrylic on canvas. “A Tissue of Lies? Could there be a more persuasively apt title for a memoir? Particularly if the rememberer of his paste is referring not so much to his own lies but to those of others…. ‘Paper, parchment, etc.,...

Behind The Scenes: The Asteroid Shop & The Ghost...
The Asteroid Shop & The Ghost Wolves are Austin-based bands I had the pleasure of working with this past week while their tour stopped in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We snapped some photos in front of these incredible murals downtown near Gold Street.   From left: Eric Brendo, Carley Carazy Wolf, Todd Pruner, Jonathan Konya   From left: Jonathan Konya, Carley Carazy Wolf, Todd Pruner, Lane...

Images below all from a body of work under the guidance of Miksang photography. Miksang, at its most basic level, is concerned with uncovering the truth of pure perception. We see something vivid and penetrating, and in that moment we can express our perception without making anything up—nothing added, nothing missing. Totally honest about what we see—straight shooting. View more of...

Disconnection with the earth - Mistakes ~ Wonders
In my haste to select some colors out of my disorganized paint box (disorganized due to my hasty packing in NYC and hasty unpacking in New Mexico), I didn’t really read the labels. As I noticed how oddly the paint was mixing with water, I considered that the paints are old. Friends often dump their unused supplies on me, and I gladly take anything. Sure there’s crust at the end of the...

Drying fall foliage
It all started with Eighteen inches. My addiction to using plants in combination with acrylic for texture. As a child, W magazine was my Bible, but I never really took to sewing. A dying bouquet of roses turned out to be my needle and thread. The pieces quickly became abstract (Meditations in Entropy), but I plan to return to character and costume design. As soon as these flowers dry.

Artist: Erin Currier
Part portraiture, part collage constructed of disinherited consumer “waste” collected in thirty five countries, part sociopolitical archive, but wholly humanist, Currier’s work has been featured in numerous solo shows, including a major exhibition at the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela Embassy in Washington, DC. Her work is exhibited and collected internationally. She lives and works in...

Artist & Photographer: Neil Craver
As a youth in North Carolina; I begun my path as an abstract painter and figurative sculptor; my motivation grew from my interest of psychophysical effects of chroma. Photography holds all the intrinsic values of all the other arts; but it is the foundation of the origins of existence. My creations are the exploration of my inner facilities; in the pursuit of contemporary knowledge expressing...
